West Ham and Mahatma Gandhi
|
Stumbled upon this on Wikipedia:
"In 1931 Gandhi visited London for a period of 3 months for talks on the future of India, he based himself at Kingsley Hall in Bromley-by-Bow and was enthusiastically received by East Enders. It is said[7] that during his stay Gandhi visited the Boleyn Tavern and drank cream soda while discussing radical politics and football with local people.
Gandhi was a keen football fan[8] and already had a strong connection to West Ham United through his friendship with its founder, Arnold Hills, while living in London completing his law studies in 1888-91. During this period Hills brought the young Gandhi onto the executive committee of the London Vegetarian Society. Gandhi also met Charlie Chaplin in nearby Canning Town.[9]"
Literally never knew any of this.
Anyone got anything else interesting to add? Any stories or anecdotes?
(In before MaSPLATma Gandhi)

The Canning Town link I've known about for years. There's a little plot named after him on the Newham Way to commemorate it. He loved the Eastend did old Gandhi and they loved him from the sounds of it.

I did know that we owe our existence to the vegetarian, teetotal cyclist Arnold Hills.
Not only was he all of those things, but he actively campaigned to convince others to emulate him.
Would not be popular on WHO

Our defending is based upon Gandhi's philosophy of passive resistance.
Another little known fact is that Gandhi had an illegitimate son, who used to post on this Board.
